Getting files off an iPhone onto a Windows PC
This is the transfer people expect to be easy and find surprisingly hostile. The reason is structural: iOS does not expose a general filesystem over USB, so Windows sees a camera, not a phone.
Why the cable disappoints
Plug an Android phone into Windows and, once you switch it to file-transfer mode, you get a browsable filesystem. Plug in an iPhone and you get a device that identifies itself as a camera. Windows can read Internal Storage\DCIM — photos and videos — and nothing else. A PDF in the Files app, a document, an export from another app: all invisible over the cable.
So the cable is a photo route, and only a photo route. For everything else you need one of the paths below.
The photo route, done properly
- Unlock the phone first, then connect. A locked iPhone does not expose storage at all.
- Tap "Trust" on the phone. The prompt appears once and is easy to miss; if you dismiss it, Windows shows an empty device with no explanation.

This PC → Apple iPhone → Internal Storage → DCIM. Copying from DCIM by hand is more reliable for large batches than the Import wizard, which has a long history of stalling partway. - If the device appears empty despite everything, unlock it again — the phone re-locks storage when the screen goes off during a long copy. This is the single most common cause of a half-finished import.
The HEIC and HEVC problem
Since iOS 11 the default capture formats are HEIC for photos and HEVC (H.265) for video. They are roughly half the size of JPEG and H.264 at similar quality, which is why Apple chose them — and Windows has historically not opened either without additional codecs from the Microsoft Store.
Two fixes, and one is much better than the other:
- Change the transfer setting, not the format. On the phone: Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC → Automatic. With this on, iOS converts to JPEG and H.264 on the way out while keeping the efficient original on the phone. This is the right answer for almost everyone.
- Change the capture format only if you keep hitting the problem: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible shoots JPEG and H.264 from then on. It costs roughly double the storage for everything you photograph afterwards, and it does nothing for pictures you have already taken.
Everything that is not a photo
- iCloud for Windows. Puts iCloud Drive in Explorer as a normal folder. The right answer if you are already an iCloud user and the file is small enough for your storage plan — free accounts get 5 GB total.
- The Apple Devices app (or iTunes on older Windows). Its File Sharing pane exposes documents belonging to specific apps. Clunky, but the only cable-based route for app documents.
- Email to yourself, under about 20 MB. Still the fastest thing for a single PDF — see attachment size limits.
- A transfer service. Share the file from the iOS share sheet, get a code or link, open it on the PC. No account, no cable, no format conversion, and it works identically on a PC that is not yours — which the cable routes do not.
One thing worth knowing before you send
Photos carry EXIF metadata, and on an iPhone that includes the GPS coordinates where the shot was taken. Social platforms usually strip it; file transfers do not — they deliver the original bytes. If you are sending photos to someone outside your household, check what is riding along.
