Six ways to get a file from your phone to a computer — and where each one breaks
Every one of these works. The useful question is not "which is best" but "which one survives my situation" — a 4 GB video, a locked-down work laptop, a hotel Wi-Fi, someone else's computer. Here is where each method actually gives out.
1. A USB cable
The fastest option when it is available, and the only one where your file never touches a network. Plug an Android phone into a computer, pull down the notification, and switch the USB mode from Charging to File transfer (MTP) — this step is the one people miss, because by default the phone charges and stays invisible to the computer.
Where it breaks: iPhones do not expose a general filesystem this way — Windows sees the camera roll and nothing else, so a PDF or a zip cannot come off an iPhone over a plain cable without iTunes/Finder or an app. MTP on Windows is also unreliable for very large single files and gives no meaningful progress or resume. And it needs the two devices to be in the same room, with the right cable, on a computer where you are allowed to plug in USB devices — plenty of managed work laptops block that outright.
2. A cloud drive (Drive, iCloud, OneDrive, Dropbox)
Upload from the phone app, open the drive on the computer, download. Reliable, resumable, and the file stays available afterwards — which is either the feature or the problem, depending on what you sent.
Where it breaks: free storage. Google gives 15 GB shared across Drive, Gmail and Photos; iCloud gives 5 GB; OneDrive gives 5 GB; Dropbox gives 2 GB. If you are already near the ceiling, a one-off 3 GB video will not fit, and the phone will tell you so only after it has spent ten minutes uploading. It also needs you to be signed in to the same account on both ends, which fails immediately if the computer is not yours. And the file stays on the provider's servers, readable by them, until you remember to delete it.
3. Email to yourself
The universal fallback. Works on any device, on any network, with no setup.
Where it breaks: at roughly 20–25 MB. Every mainstream provider caps attachments in that range, and the cap is on the encoded message, which is about a third larger than your file. A 20 MB video is often already too big. We wrote up the exact numbers in email attachment size limits.
4. WhatsApp, Telegram or Signal
Convenient because the app is already on both devices and already signed in. Telegram in particular handles large files well, and Telegram and Signal both keep the original file intact.
Where it breaks: photo and video compression. WhatsApp re-encodes anything you send through the photo picker — send a 4K clip and the other end gets a much smaller, visibly worse copy. To avoid it you have to attach the file as a document, which is a menu most people never find. Beyond that, the file lands permanently in a chat history that gets backed up, searched, and forwarded, and "delete for everyone" only works for a limited window.
5. Local network: AirDrop, Quick Share, or an SMB share
Direct device-to-device over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, no server in the middle, no size ceiling worth worrying about. When both devices are the same brand and in the same room, this is the best answer on the list.
Where it breaks: the moment the two devices are not the same ecosystem. AirDrop is Apple-to-Apple. Quick Share is Android and Windows. Cross-platform pairing is fragile, discovery frequently just fails, and on many public, guest and corporate networks client-to-client traffic is blocked at the access point — so the devices genuinely cannot see each other no matter how long you wait.
6. A transfer service with a code or link
Upload once, hand over a short code or a link, the other side downloads, the file expires. Nobody signs in, nothing stays behind, and the two devices never have to see each other or be on the same network.
Where it breaks: the free tiers. Most cap a single transfer somewhere around 2 GB and put a daily limit on top, and a link that is emailed or pasted into a group chat is a link anyone who scrolls back can still use. So which one
- Same room, same ecosystem, no cable handy: AirDrop or Quick Share. Nothing beats it.
- Same room, cable handy, Android: USB. Remember to switch to File transfer mode.
- File under ~20 MB and you want zero thinking: email it to yourself.
- You want the file to stay available for weeks: a cloud drive, if you have the space.
- The other computer is not yours, or the two ends are not on the same network: a transfer service with a code — nothing gets installed and nobody signs in anywhere.
